Join us on the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza for local authors like Sona Charaipotra (Tiny Pretty Things, Symptoms of a Heartbreak), Tracey Baptiste (The Jumbies Series, Minecraft: The Crash) and more! Check out your favorite local authors while you take in performances, kids’ activities, and the best of Downtown’s food and drink! Bring your Library Card or sign up for one at the festival to take advantage of discounts at WORD Bookstore and more!

Constitution Day- September 17, 2019


September 17 is designated as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787.

New Jersey City University will be Celebrating Constitution Day on Campus highlighting Voter Registration and the First Amendment -Freedom of Speech with an exhibit of challenged and banned books  ( https://educationservicesnews.blogspot.com/2019/09/banned-books-week-september-22-28-2019.html).

Most Challenged Books  for 2018 are:

       Reasons: banned, challenged, and relocated because it was believed to encourage children to clear browser history and change their bodies using hormones, and for mentioning “dirty magazines,” describing male anatomy, “creating confusion,” and including a transgender character
2.       A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo by Jill Twiss, illustrated by EG Keller (Juv. B9425d.)
Reasons: banned and challenged for including LGBTQIA+ content, and for political and religious viewpoints
3.       Captain Underpants series written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey  (Juv. P638a)
Reasons: series was challenged because it was perceived as encouraging disruptive behavior, while Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot was challenged for including a same-sex couple
