GALA SCREENING

Cowin Center, Teachers College
Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth is the compelling story of an
extraordinary woman's journey from her birth in a paper-thin shack in the
cotton fields of Eatonton, Georgia to her recognition as a key writer of the
20th Century. Alice Walker made history as the first black woman to win
the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her groundbreaking novel, The
Color Purple, which has been transformed from a novel, to a
Hollywood movie and latterly to a successful Broadway musical. This universal
story of triumph against all odds is not that different from Walker's own
story.
Born in 1944,
eighth child of sharecroppers, her early life unfolded in the midst of violent
racism and poverty during some of the most turbulent years of profound social
and political changes in North American history. Beauty In Truth looks at
the art and life of an artist, a self-confessed renegade and human rights
activist. Praised and pilloried, Walker is a fearless pioneer whose voice has
driven people to express joy as well as anger and ruthless
vilification. Alice Walker's inspiring journey is also a story of a
country and a people at the fault line of historical changes.
Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth is a complex exploration of Walker as
a writer, public intellectual and human rights activist. Walker was a key
architect of the US civil rights movement as much as a participant. In 2010, Walker was awarded the
LennonOno Peace Award for her ongoing humanitarian work by Yoko Ono.
Beauty In Truth offers audiences a penetrating look at
a life lived with passionate commitment to truth and justice.

New Common Care Resource for NJ educators!
New
Resource on Common Core to be Introduced from the NJ Department of Education.
The NJDOE, in partnership with the Common Core Learning Engine, has released the New Jersey Educator Resource Exchange, a website that provides instructional materials aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS).
Currently over 2,000 resources are "tagged" to particular standards and the NJ model curriculum student learning objectives (SLOs). This is a free resource to New Jersey educators, which will allow them both to download instructional resources to use in the classroom, and to upload resources for other educators to use in their own classrooms.
The Educator Resource Exchange website will allow educators, parents and community members to navigate the standards, search for and download instructional resources, create a library of resources for later use, and establish a "resource feed" that will notify them when new resources are added to the site.
Among others, these resources include lesson plans, videos, and assessment items. Access to the website is free for all users and requires only a quick registration. Educator Resource Exchange

Each Kindness, (Juv.W898e)

Lewis and published by Nancy Paulsen Books, an imprint of Penguin, is the
winner in the Books for Younger Children Category.
(Small actions, or the lack of them, can be haunting as is the case for Maya and for Chloe in their rural elementary school. This open-ended, profound tale created in free verse and sober watercolors glimpses interactions between Chloe and Maya, the new girl arriving midyear in broken sandals, before the teacher invites students to ponder their kindnesses.)

Birmingham Children’s March, ( Juv.323.11 .L665w)

by Peachtree Publishers, is the winner in the Books for Older Children
category.
(In 1963, four thousand young African American
students, from elementary through high school, voluntarily went to jail in one

(Simple and powerful illustrations
capture the excitement and hope for even the youngest reader of the 1963 March
on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The colorful crowd of 250,000 demonstrates
their strength and unity in marching to Martin Luther King’s historical speech
for racial equality.)
Two books were named Honor Books in the Books for Older Children category.

Poverty, Labor Fights and Civil Rights Set the Stage for Martin Luther King
Jr’s Final Hours,
