African American Children's Book Fair- Philadelphia -2/7/15-1-3pm
The 23rd Annual African American Children's Book Fair takes place in Philadelphia on February 7, 2015
Author and illustrators will make presentations from their books; also games, prizes, promotional give-aways and reading resources will be available. A wide selection of African American books to purchase will be featured at the event.
Authors and illustrators in attendance include Tonya Bolden, Eric Velasquez, E.B. Lewis and Zetta Elliott, Floyd Cooper and Sharon Dennis Wyeth

This event will feature over 60 talented and amazing, award winning authors and illustrators of children’s and young adult literature joining us for a fun filled afternoon.
We are pleased to announce that artist and illustrator Sophie Blackall has created unique artwork for our Book Festival featuring the characters Ivy and Bean from the series she illustrates. Sophie has also illustrated many other books and is the author and illustrator of Are You Awake?
Also attending is 2011 Pura Belpre’ award winning illustrator Eric Velasquez, Bill Thomson (Chalk), John Bemelmans Marciano (Madeline), Will Hillenbrand (famed picture book author and illustrator), Brett Helquist (Lemony Snicket), John Rocco (Blackout), Alyssa Capucilli (Biscuit), Debbie Dadey (Bailey School Kids)and Dan Yaccarino (All the Way to America). The original art work for the book, Our Children Can Soar: A Celebration of Rosa, Barack, and the Pioneers of Change, (Bloomsbury USA) (Juv. 920 .C771o) by Michelle Cook, will be on display. Featured artists are : James Ransome, AG Ford, Bryan Collier, Charlotte Riley-Webb, Cozbi A. Cabrera, Leo and Diane Dillon, E. B. Lewis, Eric Velasquez, Frank Morrison, Pat Cummings, R. Gregory Christie, and Shadra Strickland. The book was inspired by the 2008 presidential campaign slogan, “Rosa sat so Martin could march. Martin marched so Barack could run Barack ran so our children can soar.” It pays homage to the African-Americans, who paved the way for the civil rights movement,

Weiss Center events continue to teach and entertain

The M. Jerry Weiss Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature has continued to present author's of note to the NJCU community.
Eris Velasquez
On January 29,2009 author/illustrator Eric Velasquez appeared and gave an interesting and sometimes amusing presentation on his life as an artist. in the most touching part of the presentation, Velasquez, showed pictures of his visit to Puerto Rico. He visited all the places she knew growing up, and presented the pictures as a present to her before she passed away.
Readers of his book Grandma's Records enjoyed it immensely because he shared pictures of the places his grandmother knew and showed monuments to the musicians memorialized in the book. Velasquez, disclosed that he has also written a pre-quel to the book, but does not know precisely when it will be released. After the workshop, Velasquez, graciously visited the Congressman Frank J. Guarini Library and posed by the book display of his books.
Gregory Galloway
On February 26, 2009, ALEX Award winner Greg Galloway, presented an introduction to his writing career and read from his book, As Simple As Snow. Galloway also described how he developed a companion website http://assimpleassnow.com/ for readers of his book, Galloway's enigmatic book stimulated a lively discussion. Following that, a creative writing exercise demonstrated how the creative process can be stimulated with K-12 students.

Cornell William Brooks speaks at NJCU’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Celebration on January 21
Cornell William Brooks, a public interest attorney, civil rights litigator, writer, and fourth-generation ordained minister who is executive director of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice (NJISJ), a Newark-based urban research and advocacy organization dedicated to the advancement of New Jersey’s urban communities and residents, will speak at New Jersey City University’s 20th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Celebration on Wednesday, January 21.
The program, which will benefit NJCU scholarships, will be held 12:00 – 2:30 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room of the Michael Gilligan Student Union on the University campus at 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. Tickets are $30.00; $15.00 for full-time students and senior citizens over 65 years of age. The community is welcome.
Based on the theme, “The Politics of Hope in a Post-King Era,” the program is sponsored by NJCU’s Lee Hagan Africana Studies Center and Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Coretta Scott King Award-winning illustrator Eric Velasquez’s photorealistic pastel illustrations created for young adult book author Carole Boston Weatherford have been described as both “tough-minded and poetic.” The suspense and triumph of Ms. Weatherford’s books, I, Matthew Henson and Jesse Owens, Fastest Man Alive, have been heightened by the rich and historical illustrations by Mr. Velasquez. Mr. Velasquez also illustrated Addie Boswell’s The Rain Stomper and his own book, Grandma’s Records.

Looking for work, he begins to live in a market square that at night becomes a dormitory for homeless vendors. There he meets Xano, a boy his age, whose insolent behavior and fearlessness attract him. Unlike Paito, Xano despises work and he steals. Despite their differences, they become friends. (2005, Alessandra Muller) Sara Gomez: An Afro-Cuban Filmmaker is a rich, multilayered documentary about Afro-Cuban director Sarah Gomez. Born in 1943, she studied literature, piano, and Afro-Cuban ethnography before becoming the first female Cuban filmmaker. A woman of great intelligence, independence and generosity, she was a revolutionary filmmaker with intersecting concerns about the Afro-Cuban community and the value of its cultural traditions, women's issues, and the treatment of the marginalized sectors of society. Through archival footage of her works and interviews with her children and husband Germinal Hernandez, cast members of her best-know film De cierta manera,as well as colleagues and friends, we get closer to a filmmaker who invented new landscapes and brought together opposite worlds. Language: Spanish with English subtitles. Running time: 76 minutes.

A discovery of Cuban traditions and every day life told through beautiful images, sensual music and dance. (2005, Alessandra Muller) Sara Gomez: An Afro-Cuban Filmmaker is a rich, multilayered documentary about Afro-Cuban director Sarah Gomez. Born in 1943, she studied literature, piano, and Afro-Cuban ethnography before becoming the first female Cuban filmmaker. A woman of great intelligence, independence and generosity, she was a revolutionary filmmaker with intersecting concerns about the Afro-Cuban community and the value of its cultural traditions, women's issues, and the treatment of the marginalized sectors of society. Through archival footage of her works and interviews with her children and husband Germinal Hernandez, cast members of her best-know film De cierta manera,as well as colleagues and friends, we get closer to a filmmaker who invented new landscapes and brought together opposite worlds. Language: Spanish with English subtitles. Running time: 76 minutes.
A discussion between Reinaldo Barroso-Spech, Co-Director of the African Diaspora Film Festival, and artist Ben Jones ("Deliverance" THE ART OF BEN JONES 1970-2008, on view at Jersey City Museum through February 21, 2009) will follow the double feature screenings.
